  • Center the box on the paper, bring the long edges together over the top and tape the seam, then fold the ends like an envelope. Cut a little extra if the paper has a pattern you want to match, and for very soft or very thick paper.

How this calculator works

The paper has to go all the way around the box, and a little beyond each end so that the end flaps can fold flat. Going around the box covers the top, both sides and the bottom (2 × width + 2 × height), plus an overlap for the seam. Along the box, the paper needs the box's length plus the height (half the height at each end), and a little for tolerance.

around = 2 × (width + height) + overlap along = length + height + 1 in

Worked example: a 12 × 9 × 4 in box needs 2 × 13 + 2 = 28 in around and 12 + 4 + 1 = 17 in along: a piece 28 × 17 in. The 30 in wide roll is wide enough for the 28 in side to run across it, so each piece uses just 17 in of the roll's length, and a 25 ft (300 in) roll gives 300 ÷ 17 = 17 pieces. A single band of ribbon takes 44 in, and a crossed bow 78 in.

Tips before you buy

  • If the sheet is too small, the box shows through at the seam and the ends. Cut generously, then trim.
  • Use double-sided tape for a clean seam, and fold the ends crisply for neat corners.
  • A box wider than the roll needs two pieces joined at an edge. Hide the join under a ribbon.
  • Pre-cut sheets of 20 × 30 in wrap a box like this one (28 × 17 in), but a box any bigger needs a roll.
  • Save cost and waste with kraft paper, which is cheap by the roll and looks good with ribbon.

Frequently asked questions

How much wrapping paper do I need for a box?

Around the box: 2 × (width + height) plus a 1 to 2 in overlap. Along the box: length plus height plus about 1 in. A 12 × 9 × 4 in box needs a piece about 28 × 17 in.

How many presents will a roll of wrapping paper wrap?

It depends on the box. A standard 30 in × 25 ft roll wraps about 17 boxes the size of a shoebox, and a few large ones.

How much ribbon do I need for a gift?

One band around the box is 2 × (width + height) plus about 18 in for a bow. A crossed ribbon needs about 6 to 7 ft for a shoebox.
