How this calculator works
A circuit is limited by its breaker: watts = amps × volts. A 15 amp breaker at 120 V is 1,800 W, but loads that stay on for hours should use no more than 80% of that: 1,440 W. A 20 amp circuit gives 1,920 W. Divide the safe wattage (after anything else on the circuit) by the watts per strand to get the number of strands.
Worked example: on a 15 amp circuit with nothing else on it, 1,440 W allows 288 LED strands of 5 W each, but only 8 incandescent strands of 175 W. Twenty LED strands draw 100 W, under 7% of the circuit.
Tips before you buy
- Always check the maximum number of strands that you can link end to end, printed on the package. It is a separate limit from the circuit.
- Switching to LED lights makes the circuit almost a non-issue, while incandescent lights can overload a circuit with surprisingly few strands.
- Hot or warm plugs, flickering, or a tripping breaker mean you are overloading something: unplug it and rethink the setup.
- Use a GFCI outlet outdoors, outdoor-rated cords, and keep connections up off the ground and dry.
- Never run a cord through a closed door or window, or under a rug, where it can overheat or get pinched.

Frequently asked questions
How many strands of Christmas lights can I plug into one outlet?
It depends on the strands. On a 15 amp circuit you can run about 1,440 watts: around 8 incandescent strands, or hundreds of LED strands, but the number printed on the strand for end-to-end connections is often lower.
How many watts is a strand of Christmas lights?
A 100-light LED mini strand uses 4 to 5 W. An incandescent mini strand uses about 40 W, and a 25-bulb incandescent C9 strand about 175 W.
Can I overload an extension cord with lights?
Yes. A 16 gauge cord is typically rated for 13 A at most, but long cords carry less. Use a heavier cord for long runs and high loads.
