How Many Bags of Mortar for Concrete Blocks? Wall Size Chart
Part of the project planner: Planning retaining walls and drainage.
An 80 lb bag of mortar mix lays roughly 35 standard concrete blocks (8 × 16 inch), so a wall 20 ft long and 4 ft high, with 90 blocks, takes 3 bags. For 100 blocks it is 3 bags. The block mortar calculator works from the wall size or the block count, with the blocks per bag adjustable.
Mortar by number of blocks
At 35 blocks per 80 lb bag:
| Blocks | Bags of 80 lb | Wall area |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | 2 | 44 ft² |
| 100 | 3 | 89 ft² |
| 200 | 6 | 178 ft² |
| 300 | 9 | 267 ft² |
| 500 | 15 | 444 ft² |
| 1000 | 29 | 889 ft² |
Mortar by wall size
| Wall | Blocks | Bags of 80 lb | Mortar (ft³) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 × 2 ft | 23 | 1 | 0.4 |
| 20 × 4 ft | 90 | 3 | 1.5 |
| 20 × 6 ft | 135 | 4 | 2.3 |
| 30 × 6 ft | 203 | 6 | 3.5 |
| 40 × 8 ft | 360 | 11 | 6.2 |
| 60 × 8 ft | 540 | 16 | 9.3 |
A bigger wall, 40 ft long and 8 ft high, needs 360 blocks and 11 bags.
What changes the amount
- Joint thickness: 3/8 inch is standard. Thicker joints use more.
- Skill and waste: mortar that falls or dries on the board is wasted, which is why we count only about 35 blocks per bag.
- Filling the cores: grout or concrete for the hollow cores is extra, and it is a lot more material than the mortar.
- Block size: 8×8×16 is standard. Other sizes change the count.
Mixing and laying
- Mix in small batches that you can use in about 90 minutes.
- Add water a little at a time until the mortar slides off the trowel and stays on the block.
- Lay the first course on a full bed of mortar, level in both directions.
- Butter the end of each block, set it, and tap it to level. Strike the joints when they are thumbprint hard.
- Keep the bags dry and off the ground.

Frequently asked questions
How many bags of mortar for 100 concrete blocks?
3 bags of 80 lb mix at about 35 blocks a bag (100 blocks is 2.9 bags, rounded up).
How much mortar for a wall 20 ft long and 4 ft high?
3 bags of 80 lb for 90 blocks.
How many blocks per square foot of wall?
About 1.125 for standard 8 × 16 inch blocks: one block covers about 0.89 ft² of wall, joints included.
What type of mortar should I use?
Type N for general use above ground and Type S for below ground and walls that need more strength. Follow the plans.
How long does mixed mortar last?
About 90 minutes, depending on the weather. Do not add water to mortar that has begun to set.
