What Size Ceiling Fan Do I Need? Blade Span by Room Size
Part of the project planner: Planning heating, cooling and ventilation.
Choose the blade span from the size of the room: a 12 × 14 ft room (168 ft²) wants a fan about 44 inches across. Bigger fans move more air at a lower speed, so they are quieter. The ceiling fan size calculator also gives the downrod length for your ceiling height.
Fan size by room area
| Room area | Blade span |
|---|---|
| 64 ft² | 29 to 36 inches |
| 100 ft² | 36 to 42 inches |
| 144 ft² | 36 to 42 inches |
| 168 ft² | 44 inches |
| 225 ft² | 44 inches |
| 300 ft² | 50 to 54 inches |
| 400 ft² | 50 to 54 inches |
| 500 ft² | 60 inches or larger |
Fan size for common rooms
| Room | Area | Blade span |
|---|---|---|
| 8 × 8 ft | 64 ft² | 29 to 36 inches |
| 10 × 10 ft | 100 ft² | 36 to 42 inches |
| 12 × 12 ft | 144 ft² | 36 to 42 inches |
| 12 × 14 ft | 168 ft² | 44 inches |
| 14 × 16 ft | 224 ft² | 44 inches |
| 16 × 20 ft | 320 ft² | 50 to 54 inches |
| 20 × 20 ft | 400 ft² | 50 to 54 inches |
Downrod by ceiling height
The blades should hang about 8 to 9 feet above the floor:
| Ceiling height | Mount style | Downrod |
|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | Flush (hugger) mount | None needed |
| 9 ft | Standard mount with a downrod | 12 inches |
| 10 ft | Standard mount with a downrod | 24 inches |
| 12 ft | Standard mount with a downrod | 48 inches |
| 14 ft | Standard mount with a downrod | 72 inches |
| 16 ft | Standard mount with a downrod | Over 72 inches: custom |
Choosing a fan
- Large rooms: use a bigger fan, or two fans, rather than one that spins fast.
- Airflow (CFM): compare the CFM rating on the box, since blade pitch and motor also matter. See the CFM calculator.
- Damp locations: use a fan rated damp or wet for a porch, a bathroom or a patio.
- Mounting: use a box rated for ceiling fans and fixed to a joist or a brace. A normal light box can fall under the weight and wobble.
- Direction: counter-clockwise (summer) pushes air down for a cooling breeze; clockwise at low speed (winter) lifts it and mixes warm air.
Estimates only: follow the fan maker's instructions and your local electrical code.
Frequently asked questions
What size ceiling fan for a 12x14 room?
A fan with a blade span of 44 inches suits a 12 × 14 ft room (168 ft²).
What size fan for a small bedroom?
For 100 square feet, a span of 36 to 42 inches. For a 64 ft² box room, 29 to 36 inches.
What size fan for a large living room?
A span of 50 to 54 inches for 400 ft². For very large rooms, use two fans, or one over 60 inches.
Do I need a downrod?
For an 8 ft ceiling a flush (hugger) mount is usual. Higher ceilings need a downrod so the blades sit about 8 to 9 feet above the floor: 24 inches for a 10 ft ceiling.
How far should a ceiling fan be from the ceiling and walls?
Blades should be at least 7 feet above the floor (8 to 9 feet is ideal), at least 8 to 10 inches below the ceiling for airflow, and at least 18 inches from any wall.
