How this calculator works

This runs our stud and drywall calculators on one wall. Studs are the length divided by the spacing plus one, plus extras for corners, doors and windows and a few spares. Plates are one on the bottom and two on top. Drywall is the wall area for each side you finish, with 10% waste, and screws, tape and compound follow from the area.

studs = ⌈length ÷ spacing⌉ + 1 + extras drywall sheets = ⌈wall area × sides × 1.1 ÷ 32 ft²⌉

Worked example: a 20 ft wall, 8 ft high, with studs at 16 inches, two corners and a door takes 26 studs and 8 plates of 8 ft. Drywall on both sides is 11 sheets, with 352 screws, 1 roll of tape and 1 box of compound.

Tips before you buy

  • Studs are usually 16 inches on center, with 24 inches allowed in some non-bearing walls. Drywall edges should land on a stud.
  • Use pressure-treated lumber for any plate that sits on concrete, and fasten it with anchors.
  • Plan the electrical and plumbing before you close the wall, and ask for an inspection where the code requires it.
  • Buy straight studs. Sight down each board, and keep the crowned edge up.
  • Frame a bit tall and cut to fit, since ceilings and floors are never perfectly level.
