Common Mistakes When Hanging Drywall (Sheets, Screws, Mud)

The short answer

Drywall is bought in big, awkward sheets, so mistakes cost time and money. A 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls and a ceiling is 528 sq ft of board with 10% extra, or 19 sheets of 4 × 8 ft, with about 608 screws and 5.3 gallons of joint compound. The drywall calculator sizes your room.

Part of the project planner: Planning to frame and finish a wall.

Mistake 1: leaving the ceiling out

It is easy to price the walls and then find the ceiling doubles the board. For the example room:

Walls only143.8 gal1
Walls and ceiling195.3 gal1

Mistake 2: choosing the wrong sheet length

A longer sheet means fewer butt joints, which are the hardest to finish flat. The same room by sheet size:

4 × 8 ft19608
4 × 9 ft17612
4 × 12 ft13624

Check the stairs and doorways: a 12 ft sheet has to get into the room.

Mistake 3: not enough extra

Cutouts for windows, outlets and odd corners all waste board. Sheets for the example room:

10%19
15%19

Mistake 4: butt joints in the wrong places and loose screws

  • Hang sheets with the long edge across the studs, and stagger the joints so they do not line up.
  • Keep the factory (tapered) edges together, since butt joints have no taper and need more finishing.
  • Drive screws until they just dimple the paper, no deeper, and never break the paper.
  • Space screws at the interval in the code or the maker instructions, and check the framing with the stud calculator if you are building the wall as well.

Mistake 5: rushing the mud

Thick coats crack and take days to dry. Use three thin coats, let each dry, sand lightly and wipe off the dust. Wide, feathered edges hide the seams better than narrow, tall ones. For the whole shopping list, use the drywall room materials calculator. Estimates only.

Frequently asked questions

How many sheets of drywall do I need for a room?

A 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls and a ceiling needs 19 sheets of 4 × 8 ft with 10% extra, which is 528 sq ft in all.

Is it better to use 4 × 12 sheets?

Fewer joints are easier to finish: the same room takes 13 sheets of 4 × 12 ft. They are heavy to handle, so a helper or a lift is worth it.

How much joint compound do I need?

Roughly 5 gallons for this room, which is 2 boxes of the ready-mixed kind. Count on a bit more if you are learning.

Hang the ceiling first or the walls?

The ceiling first, so that the wall sheets help to support the edges of the ceiling sheets.
