Common Mistakes Hanging Wallpaper (UK): Rolls, Repeat, Drops

The short answer

Wallpaper is a one-shot purchase: a later roll may come from a different batch. A room with 14 m of wall and 2.4 m high walls needs 7 rolls of the standard 0.53 × 10.05 m size, cut into 4 drops per roll, with no repeat to match. The wallpaper calculator works out yours with the repeat.

Mistake 1: ignoring the pattern repeat

Each drop must start in the right place in the pattern, so a bigger repeat wastes more of the roll:

16 cm2.66 m39
32 cm2.82 m39
53 cm3.03 m39

Mistake 2: not allowing for ceiling height

A taller room gets fewer drops per roll:

2.2 m47
2.4 m47
2.7 m39
3 m39

Mistake 3: mixing up the roll width

Standard rolls are 53 cm wide, but wide and some designer papers are different:

53 cm277
68 cm216
106 cm144

Mistake 4: poor preparation

  • Strip old paper and fill and sand the wall, then seal it so the paste does not soak into plaster.
  • Use lining paper under heavy or thin papers to hide imperfections.
  • Draw a plumb line for the first drop, since the corner is rarely vertical.

Mistake 5: rushing the hanging

  • Let the paper soak for the time given, so it expands before it goes on the wall.
  • Hang from the plumb line and smooth from the centre to the edges.
  • Cut a few centimetres long at the top and bottom and trim with a sharp blade.
  • Wipe off excess paste straight away, and keep a spare roll for repairs.

If the wall is awkward, paint is an easier option: see the paint calculator. Estimates only.

Frequently asked questions

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?

With 14 m of wall, 2.4 m high and a standard 0.53 × 10.05 m roll, 7 rolls, in 27 drops of 2.50 m, with no pattern repeat.

What is a pattern repeat?

The distance before the pattern repeats down the roll. A bigger repeat wastes more paper because each drop must be matched to the last.

Should I check the batch number?

Yes. Rolls from different batches can differ in shade, so buy all you need at once and check the numbers match.

Do I paste the wall or the paper?

It depends on the paper: paste-the-wall papers are easier, but others need pasting on a table. Follow the instructions on the roll.
