Common Mistakes Laying a Concrete Base (UK): Depth, Mix, Waste

The short answer

Concrete cannot be topped up once it has started to set, so the amount matters. A 3 × 3 m base at 100 mm thick is 0.99 m³ with 10% extra, or 13 bags of cement in a 1:2:4 style mix. The concrete calculator sizes yours.

Mistake 1: getting the thickness wrong

Thickness multiplies the whole area, so a small error is a big one:

ThicknessVolume m³Ordered m³Cement bags
75 mm0.740.7510
100 mm0.99113
125 mm1.241.2516
150 mm1.481.519

Mistake 2: allowing no extra

The ground is not perfectly flat and some is lost in the formwork. Ten percent is common:

ExtraVolume m³Cement bags
0%0.9012
5%0.9512
10%0.9913
15%1.0414

Mistake 3: measuring the wrong size

Volume grows quickly with area:

BaseVolume m³Cement bags
2 × 2 m0.446
3 × 3 m0.9913
4 × 3 m1.3217
6 × 4 m2.6434
8 × 5 m4.4056

Measure inside the formwork, in metres, and keep to one unit.

Mistake 4: a poor sub-base and no membrane

Dig out the topsoil, compact a hardcore layer, and blind it with sand. Add a damp proof membrane under a floor that must stay dry. The shed base materials calculator lists the hardcore, membrane and concrete together.

Mistake 5: poor mixing, finishing and curing

  • Mix a consistent batch: too much water weakens concrete, and varying the batches shows.
  • Tamp the surface to level it, and let the bleed water go before floating.
  • Do not pour in frost, and cover the slab against rain and sun.
  • Keep it damp for several days while it cures.

For a floor screed, use the screed calculator. Estimates only: check the mix and the depth for your use.

Frequently asked questions

How much concrete do I need for a 3 × 3 m base?

At 100 mm thick with 10% extra, 0.99 m³, which is about 13 bags if you mix it yourself, or 1 m³ ordered ready-mixed.

How thick should a concrete base be?

A shed or path base is often 75 to 100 mm and a driveway or garage floor is thicker. Check what suits the load and the ground.

Is it cheaper to mix it myself?

For a small job, yes, but a big pour is hard work and a ready-mix lorry gives a more even result. Ready-mixed is sold by the cubic metre, usually with a minimum.

Do I need building regulations approval?

A small garden base usually does not, but a garage or an extension does. Check with your local building control.
