How Many Bundles of Shingles for 1,400 Square Feet?

1,400 square feet of roof is 14 squares. At three bundles a square that is 42 bundles, so buy 47 bundles with 10% for waste, or 49 with 15% for a hip roof. The calculator below opens on 1,400 sq ft of roof: change the waste or bundles per square, or switch to a house footprint if 1,400 sq ft is the floor area.

Your project

Pick the second choice if you already have the roof surface in square feet (from a measurement, a quote or an aerial report). The footprint and pitch are then not needed.

The surface of the roof itself, not the footprint of the house. Add the roof planes together, and include dormers.

Extra shingles for cuts at the edges, ridge and valleys. A plain two-sided roof needs the least; more corners and valleys need more.

A "square" is 100 square feet of roof. Most shingles come 3 bundles to a square. Check the label on the bundle.

  • One roofing square is 100 ft² of roof. Most shingles come three bundles to a square.
  • This uses the roof area you entered. If it leaves out dormers, valleys, chimneys or separate roof sections, add them before you buy. Drip edge and ridge cap are bought by edge length, not area: measure the eaves, rakes and ridge and use the drip edge calculator and the ridge cap calculator.

Before you buy: round up to whole packs, check the size printed on the label, and add a little spare. Your supplier has the final say.

Shingle bundles for 1,400 sq ft of roof

These counts are for 1,400 sq ft of actual roof surface, measured on the slope. Most architectural and 3-tab shingles come three bundles to a square (100 sq ft); some heavier premium shingles take four. Suppliers sell whole bundles, so each count is rounded up.

You will also need about 2 rolls of synthetic underlayment (1,000 sq ft rolls with 10% for laps), plus starter strip along the eaves and rakes and ridge cap along the ridges and hips.

If 1,400 sq ft is the house footprint

Many people know the floor area of the house, not the roof. A roof covers the footprint plus the overhang, and the slope makes it larger again. For a 40 × 35 ft house (1,400 sq ft) with a 1 ft overhang, the roof covers 1,554 sq ft in plan, and the table shows how the pitch adds to that. Bundles include 10% waste, at three a square.

Weight, nails and edge metal

Architectural shingles weigh about 60 to 80 lb a bundle, so 47 bundles are roughly 3,290 lb (1.6 tons) to lift onto the roof, which is the hard part of the job. Spread bundles across the roof's rafters, never stacked in one spot.

At about 320 nails a square (four per shingle), a 14.0 square roof uses around 4,480 nails, which is a 25 lb box or a couple of coils for a nail gun. Drip edge runs along the eaves and up the rakes: measure those edges and divide by 10 for the number of 10 ft pieces.

A 1,400 sq ft roof: getting the bundles up there

1,400 sq ft of roof comes to 14.0 squares, which is 47 bundles with 10% waste (42 with none). At 60 to 80 lb a bundle, that order weighs about 2,820 to 3,760 lb, and all of it has to reach the roof.

Carried by hand, that is 47 trips up a ladder with a load on one shoulder, which is tiring and risky. A supplier with a boom truck or a conveyor can put the bundles on the roof for a fee, and a rented ladder hoist does the same job more slowly. Whichever you use, lay the bundles flat and spread them out so that no one spot carries the lot.

Spreading the bundles along the ridge

The roofing calculator, given its footprint, puts the 40 × 35 ft example house at 58 bundles with 10% waste. A simple gable roof over it has a ridge 40 ft long, so if the delivery is stacked along the ridge each side gets 29 bundles, which is about 7 for every 10 ft of ridge on each side.

Bundles are usually set near the ridge, where they cannot slide, and spread out so that the load is shared between many rafters. Lay them flat and do not bend them over the peak in cold weather, when shingles are stiff and can crack. Then work each side from the eave upward, pulling bundles down as you need them.

Frequently asked questions

How many bundles of shingles do I need for 1,400 square feet?

1,400 square feet of roof is 14 squares. At three bundles a square that is 42 bundles exactly, so buy 47 bundles with 10% for waste on a simple gable roof, or 49 with 15% for a hip roof or one with valleys.

How many squares is 1,400 square feet of roof?

14 squares, because one roofing square is 100 square feet. With 10% waste you order 15.4 squares, which suppliers round to whole bundles: 47.

What if 1,400 sq ft is the size of my house, not the roof?

Then the roof is bigger, because it slopes and overhangs the walls. A 40 × 35 ft house (1,400 sq ft) with a 1 ft overhang and a 6/12 pitch has about 1,737 sq ft of roof, which is 17.4 squares and 58 bundles with 10% waste.
