How Many Bundles of Shingles for 2,200 Square Feet?

2,200 square feet of roof is 22 squares. At three bundles a square that is 66 bundles, so buy 73 bundles with 10% for waste, or 76 with 15% for a hip roof. The calculator below opens on 2,200 sq ft of roof: change the waste or bundles per square, or switch to a house footprint if 2,200 sq ft is the floor area.

Your project

Pick the second choice if you already have the roof surface in square feet (from a measurement, a quote or an aerial report). The footprint and pitch are then not needed.

The surface of the roof itself, not the footprint of the house. Add the roof planes together, and include dormers.

Extra shingles for cuts at the edges, ridge and valleys. A plain two-sided roof needs the least; more corners and valleys need more.

A "square" is 100 square feet of roof. Most shingles come 3 bundles to a square. Check the label on the bundle.

  • One roofing square is 100 ft² of roof. Most shingles come three bundles to a square.
  • This uses the roof area you entered. If it leaves out dormers, valleys, chimneys or separate roof sections, add them before you buy. Drip edge and ridge cap are bought by edge length, not area: measure the eaves, rakes and ridge and use the drip edge calculator and the ridge cap calculator.

Before you buy: round up to whole packs, check the size printed on the label, and add a little spare. Your supplier has the final say.

Shingle bundles for 2,200 sq ft of roof

These counts are for 2,200 sq ft of actual roof surface, measured on the slope. Most architectural and 3-tab shingles come three bundles to a square (100 sq ft); some heavier premium shingles take four. Suppliers sell whole bundles, so each count is rounded up.

You will also need about 3 rolls of synthetic underlayment (1,000 sq ft rolls with 10% for laps), plus starter strip along the eaves and rakes and ridge cap along the ridges and hips.

If 2,200 sq ft is the house footprint

Many people know the floor area of the house, not the roof. A roof covers the footprint plus the overhang, and the slope makes it larger again. For a 55 × 40 ft house (2,200 sq ft) with a 1 ft overhang, the roof covers 2,394 sq ft in plan, and the table shows how the pitch adds to that. Bundles include 10% waste, at three a square.

Weight, nails and edge metal

Architectural shingles weigh about 60 to 80 lb a bundle, so 73 bundles are roughly 5,110 lb (2.6 tons) to lift onto the roof, which is the hard part of the job. Spread bundles across the roof's rafters, never stacked in one spot.

At about 320 nails a square (four per shingle), a 22.0 square roof uses around 7,040 nails, which is a 25 lb box or a couple of coils for a nail gun. Drip edge runs along the eaves and up the rakes: measure those edges and divide by 10 for the number of 10 ft pieces.

A 2,200 sq ft roof: about 2.2 to 2.9 tons on the driveway

2,200 sq ft of roof is 22.0 squares, so 66 bundles without waste and 73 with 10%. At 60 to 80 lb a bundle the delivery weighs 4,380 to 5,840 lb, which is 2.2 to 2.9 tons, and it arrives on pallets.

Decide where the pallets go before the truck comes. They need firm, level ground that the delivery driver can reach, and they should not block the spot where the dumpster for the old roof has to stand. Keep the bundles flat, dry and out of strong sun until they are used, since shingles stored on edge or left to heat up in their wrappers can stick together or take a curve.

How much bigger the roof is than the floor

The 55 × 40 ft example house has 2,200 sq ft of floor, and the roofing calculator in footprint mode gives it 2,677 sq ft of roof at a 6/12 pitch with a 1 ft overhang. That is 1.22 times the floor area, or 22% more.

Two things make the difference. The overhang widens the roof to 57 × 42 ft in plan, which is 2,394 sq ft, and the slope then stretches every foot of run to 1.118 ft. Multiply the two and you have the roof. For a quick check on any simple gable house, work out the plan area with the overhang and multiply by the slope factor for your pitch.

Frequently asked questions

How many bundles of shingles do I need for 2,200 square feet?

2,200 square feet of roof is 22 squares. At three bundles a square that is 66 bundles exactly, so buy 73 bundles with 10% for waste on a simple gable roof, or 76 with 15% for a hip roof or one with valleys.

How many squares is 2,200 square feet of roof?

22 squares, because one roofing square is 100 square feet. With 10% waste you order 24.2 squares, which suppliers round to whole bundles: 73.

What if 2,200 sq ft is the size of my house, not the roof?

Then the roof is bigger, because it slopes and overhangs the walls. A 55 × 40 ft house (2,200 sq ft) with a 1 ft overhang and a 6/12 pitch has about 2,677 sq ft of roof, which is 26.8 squares and 89 bundles with 10% waste.
