10 yards of concrete by type
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so 10 yards is 270 cubic feet. Multiply by the weight of a cubic foot of the concrete you are using.
| Type of concrete | Density | Weight | US tons | Kilograms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lightweight concrete, a rough figure | 115 lb/ft³ | 31,050 lb | 15.53 | 14,084 |
| Plain concrete, no steel | 145 lb/ft³ | 39,150 lb | 19.58 | 17,758 |
| Reinforced concrete, and the usual rule of thumb | 150 lb/ft³ | 40,500 lb | 20.25 | 18,370 |
| Heavily reinforced, a rough figure | 160 lb/ft³ | 43,200 lb | 21.60 | 19,595 |
The slab 10 yards makes, and what it weighs per square foot
The total stays at 40,500 lb. A thinner slab spreads it over more ground.
| Slab thickness | Area from 10 yards | Weight per sq ft | Total weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 in | 1,080 sq ft | 37.5 lb | 40,500 lb |
| 4 in | 810 sq ft | 50.0 lb | 40,500 lb |
| 5 in | 648 sq ft | 62.5 lb | 40,500 lb |
| 6 in | 540 sq ft | 75.0 lb | 40,500 lb |
| 8 in | 405 sq ft | 100.0 lb | 40,500 lb |
Ten yards: one full truck
A ready-mix truck carries around 10 cubic yards, so 10 yards is one full load: 40,500 lb of concrete, 20.25 tons, before you count the truck itself. Keep that weight off thin driveways, septic tanks and the edge of a fresh excavation.
Poured 4 inches thick the load covers 810 square feet, and at 6 inches 540 square feet. Once it is down, a 4 inch slab weighs 50.0 lb on every square foot.
Worked example
10 × 27 = 270 cubic feet. 270 × 150 lb = 40,500 lb. 40,500 ÷ 2,000 = 20.25 US tons.

Frequently asked questions
How much does 10 yards of concrete weigh?
About 40,500 lb, or 20.25 US tons, for normal concrete at 150 lb per cubic foot. 10 yards is 270 cubic feet.
How many tons is 10 yards of concrete?
20.25 US tons (18,370 kg). Heavily reinforced concrete is nearer 21.60 tons and lightweight concrete 15.53 tons.
Will 10 yards of concrete fit in one truck?
Yes. A ready-mix truck carries around 10 cubic yards, so 10 yards is one full load.
Is 40,500 lb the wet or the cured weight of 10 yards of concrete?
It is a planning figure for either: we have no sourced separate cured weight for normal concrete, so this page does not give one. The Federal Highway Administration puts typical normal-weight concrete at 145 lb per cubic foot plain and about 5 lb more with reinforcement, and says ready-mix is accepted at delivery on its fresh (wet) density. At 145 lb per cubic foot 10 yards is 39,150 lb, 1,350 lb less than at 150. If a trailer, truck or floor limit is close, ask the plant for the fresh unit weight of your mix.
