  • A path needs firm edges so the surface stays in place: steel, plastic, stone or timber edging all work. Slope the path slightly so that water runs off, and make it at least 3 feet wide for comfortable walking, or 4 feet for two people side by side. Call 811 before you dig.

How this calculator works

A path is a long thin rectangle. Pavers are the area divided by the area of one paver, with waste, on a 4 inch stone base and a 1 inch bed of sand. Gravel and mulch are the area times the depth, converted to tons or cubic yards. Edging runs along both sides.

pavers = ⌈length × width × (1 + waste) ÷ area of one paver⌉ gravel (yd³) = area × depth (ft) ÷ 27

Worked example: a 30 × 3 ft path (90 ft²) in 12 × 12 inch pavers takes 99 pavers, 1.9 tons of base stone and 0.38 tons of sand. The same path in 3 inches of gravel takes 1.3 tons, or 0.83 cubic yards of mulch. Edging is 60 ft on both sides.

Tips before you buy

  • Mark the path with a garden hose or string first, and walk it before you dig, so that the curves feel natural.
  • For pavers, compact the base and screed the sand level, and lay the pavers tight with their joints filled with sand.
  • A gravel path wants angular stone that locks together, laid on fabric, with firm edges.
  • A mulch path is quick and cheap but needs topping up every year or two.
  • Slope the path gently to the side so that it sheds water, and avoid leaving low spots.
