How this calculator works
We find the volume (area × depth), convert to cubic yards, add your allowance, and then convert to weight using the density of the material. Aggregate is heavy and its weight varies with stone size and moisture, so treat the tonnage as a close estimate, not a precise number.
Worked example: a 20 × 10 ft path (200 ft²), 4 in deep, in crushed stone with no waste: 200 × 0.333 = 66.7 ft³, or 2.47 yd³. At 1.4 tons per yd³ that is 3.46 tons.

Approximate figures. Your supplier's numbers are the ones to use.
| Material | Tons per yd³ | Lb per ft³ |
|---|---|---|
| Crushed stone (3/4 in) | 1.4 | 105 |
| Pea gravel | 1.35 | 100 |
| Road base / crushed gravel | 1.5 | 110 |
| River rock / decorative stone | 1.3 | 96 |
| Dry sand | 1.35 | 100 |
| Topsoil | 1.1 | 81 |
Tips before you buy
- Driveways and heavy-use areas need a 4 to 8 in base of compactable stone such as crushed stone or road base, topped with a finish layer. Pea gravel and river rock do not compact and shift under tires.
- Ordering by the ton? Ask whether the price includes delivery, and what the truck can legally carry.
- Lay landscape fabric under paths and beds to stop gravel sinking into the soil and weeds growing through.

Frequently asked questions
How many tons of gravel in a cubic yard?
Roughly 1.4 tons for crushed stone, 1.35 for pea gravel and 1.5 for road base. A cubic yard of dry gravel weighs about 2,700 to 3,000 lb.
How much gravel do I need for a driveway?
Multiply length by width by depth. A 12 × 40 ft driveway with a 6 in base is 480 ft² × 0.5 ft = 240 ft³, or 8.9 yd³, about 12.5 tons of crushed stone. Add 10 to 15% for compaction.
How deep should gravel be for a path?
Two to three inches of gravel over compacted soil and fabric is enough for footpaths. Driveways and patios need a deeper, compacted base.
How much does a yard of gravel cost?
It varies a lot by region and stone type, from roughly $25 to $70 per ton for common aggregates, plus delivery. Enter your local price above for a cost estimate.
