Gravel Driveway Materials List: Base Stone, Top Layer and Fabric
A 12 × 50 ft gravel driveway takes about 18 tons of stone: 12.8 tons of compacted base (4 inches) and 5.7 tons of 3/4 inch crushed stone on top (2 inches), plus geotextile fabric underneath. A dump truck carries roughly 10 to 15 tons, so this is one to two deliveries. Here is the full list.
The materials list
| What to buy | How much | How we worked it out |
|---|---|---|
| Base stone (crusher run or road base) | 12.8 tons (8.5 yd³) | Gravel calculator: 600 ft² at 4 in compacted, with 15% for compaction, at 1.5 tons per yd³ |
| Top layer (3/4 in crushed stone) | 5.7 tons (4.1 yd³) | Gravel calculator: 2 in, with 10% extra, at 1.4 tons per yd³ |
| Geotextile fabric | About 700 ft² | A strip about 14 ft wide along the 50 ft, with overlap, over soft or clay soil |
| Edging (optional) | 100 ft | Steel, timber or stone edging keeps the gravel from spreading onto the lawn |
| Culvert pipe or drainage | If the plans need it | Where the driveway crosses a ditch. Check local rules |
| Tools | Plate compactor, landscape rake, wheelbarrow, shovels | Rent a plate compactor or ask the supplier about spreading the stone |
Materials for other driveway lengths
12 ft wide. Base 4 inches (15% extra), top 2 inches (10% extra):
| Driveway | Base stone | Top layer | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 ft × 12 ft | 7.7 tons | 3.4 tons | 11.1 tons |
| 50 ft × 12 ft | 12.8 tons | 5.7 tons | 18.5 tons |
| 75 ft × 12 ft | 19.2 tons | 8.6 tons | 27.7 tons |
| 100 ft × 12 ft | 25.6 tons | 11.4 tons | 37.0 tons |
Ordering and delivery
- Order by the ton, and ask whether the price includes delivery. A dump truck carries about 10 to 15 tons, so a longer driveway is several loads.
- Check where the truck can tip, and whether it can drive on your lawn or drive without damaging a surface.
- Ask for a graded base (with fines) for the bottom layer and clean angular stone for the top.
- Spread and compact the base before the top layer goes on, in layers no more than about 4 inches thick.
How the job goes
- Mark the driveway, call 811, and strip the grass and topsoil. Shape the ground with a slight crown (about 2%) so water runs off to the sides.
- Compact the ground, lay the fabric, and overlap the seams by about a foot.
- Spread the base stone, rake it level, wet it lightly, and compact it with a plate compactor.
- Spread the top layer, rake it smooth to the crown, and compact it again.
- Top up the stone in low spots each year. A gravel driveway needs regular raking and refilling.

Frequently asked questions
How much gravel do I need for a 12x50 driveway?
About 18 tons in two layers: 12.8 tons of base stone 4 inches deep, and 5.7 tons of 3/4 inch crushed stone 2 inches deep on top, with allowances for compaction and waste.
How deep should a gravel driveway be?
Six inches in total on good soil, in layers (a coarse base, then a finer top layer), and more on soft or clay ground. Each layer is compacted separately.
What kind of gravel is best for a driveway?
Angular crushed stone that locks together: a graded base such as crusher run or road base, topped with 3/4 inch crushed stone. Round pea gravel and river rock shift under tires.
Do I need fabric under a gravel driveway?
Over soft or clay soil, yes: geotextile fabric stops the stone sinking into the ground and keeps weeds down. This driveway needs about 700 ft² of fabric, including overlap and the edges.
