Square Footage Chart: How Many Square Feet Is a 10x10, 12x12?
Square footage is length × width. A 10 × 10 ft room is 100 square feet, a 10 × 12 is 120, a 12 × 12 is 144 and a 20 × 20 is 400. Find your size in the chart below, or enter odd shapes and feet and inches in the area calculator.

What to do with the number
- Flooring: add 5 to 10% for cuts. See flooring for a 10 × 10 room or a 12 × 12 room.
- Paint: paint goes on the walls, not the floor, so use the wall area. See paint for a 10 × 10 room and how far a gallon of paint goes.
- Concrete, gravel and soil: multiply the square feet by the depth in feet and divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 10 × 10 slab at 4 inches is a worked example.
- Drywall: see drywall for a 12 × 12 room.
Rooms that are not rectangles
Split an L-shaped room into two rectangles, work out each and add them. For circles, triangles and the walls and ceiling, see how to calculate square footage; for boards and trim sold by length, linear feet to square feet; and for acres, how many square feet are in an acre.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet is a 10 x 10 room?
100 square feet: 10 feet times 10 feet. That is 11.1 square yards or 9.3 square meters.
How many square feet is a 12 x 12 room?
144 square feet, which is 16.0 square yards or 13.4 square meters.
How many square feet is a 10 x 12 room?
120 square feet (13.3 square yards).
How many square feet is a 20 x 20 garage?
400 square feet, a typical two-car garage. Its walls run 80 feet around.
Is a 10 x 10 room 100 square feet or 10 square feet?
One hundred. Square footage is length times width, not length plus width. Adding the sides (10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 40 feet) gives the perimeter, which is what you need for baseboard or edging.
How do I find square feet if the room is in feet and inches?
Turn the inches into a decimal of a foot first (divide by 12): 10 ft 6 in is 10.5 ft. Then multiply length by width. The area calculator accepts feet and inches directly.
