Common Mistakes With Gravel Driveways and Paths (Tons, Depth)
Gravel is sold by the ton or the cubic yard, and the two are easily confused. A 20 × 10 ft area at 4 in deep takes 3.8 tons (2.7 cubic yards) with 10% extra. The gravel calculator converts for you.
Part of the project planner: Planning a new driveway.
Mistake 1: a layer that is too thin
Gravel sinks into soft ground and scatters under tires. Depth changes the load fast:
| Depth | Tons | Cubic yards |
|---|---|---|
| 2 in | 1.90 | 1.36 |
| 3 in | 2.85 | 2.04 |
| 4 in | 3.80 | 2.72 |
| 6 in | 5.70 | 4.07 |
| 8 in | 7.60 | 5.43 |
Mistake 2: using the wrong density
A cubic yard of gravel weighs more or less depending on the stone and its moisture. The same 4 in layer:
| Density | Tons |
|---|---|
| 1.3 tons per cu yd (light, such as pea gravel) | 3.53 |
| 1.4 tons per cu yd (typical) | 3.80 |
| 1.5 tons per cu yd (dense crushed stone) | 4.07 |
Ask what the yard uses, and use the cubic yards to tons calculator to convert.
Mistake 3: underestimating a long drive
Quantities add up quickly over a long strip. At 4 in:
| Driveway | Tons | Cubic yards |
|---|---|---|
| 12 × 40 ft | 9.1 | 6.5 |
| 12 × 60 ft | 13.7 | 9.8 |
| 14 × 100 ft | 26.6 | 19.0 |
Mistake 4: no base and no compaction
Gravel on loose soil turns to ruts. Strip the topsoil, shape the grade so water runs off, compact the base, and compact each layer. For a drive the gravel driveway materials calculator adds the base, the top layer and the fabric to one list.
Mistake 5: no edging and no drainage
- Fit edging or a border so that the stone stays in place.
- Crown the drive or slope it so that water leaves the surface, away from the house.
- Keep the layer thickness even, and rake after the first few weeks as it settles.
Estimates only: order from the yard that will deliver, and ask them what depth they suggest for your use.
Frequently asked questions
How many tons of gravel do I need?
A 20 × 10 ft area at 4 in deep is 3.8 tons with 10% extra, which is 2.7 cubic yards.
How many tons are in a cubic yard of gravel?
About 1.4 tons for common crushed stone, which varies from 1.3 to 1.5 or so with the type and moisture. Ask your supplier.
How deep should a gravel driveway be?
A driveway is often built in layers of a few inches each, on a compacted base, and the total depth is greater than a path. Local conditions matter, so ask the supplier.
Do I need fabric under gravel?
It keeps the stone from mixing into soft soil and slows weeds. It is common under driveways and paths, but not every job needs it.
