Common Mistakes When Spreading Mulch (How Deep and How Much)

The short answer

Mulch is easy to over-order and easy to spread badly. A 20 × 10 ft bed at 3 in deep takes 1.85 cubic yards, which is 50 cubic feet or 25 bags of 2 cu ft. The mulch calculator sizes your own beds.

Mistake 1: spreading it too deep

Depth is the biggest lever on quantity, and a deep layer is not better. The example bed by depth:

1 in0.62179
2 in1.233317
3 in1.855025
4 in2.476734
6 in3.7010050

Two to three inches stops most weeds without smothering the roots.

Mistake 2: guessing the area

Beds are rarely neat rectangles. Break an odd bed into a few shapes, or use the area option. A few sizes at 3 in:

10 × 10 ft0.9313
20 × 10 ft1.8525
30 × 15 ft4.1757
40 × 20 ft7.41100

Mistake 3: the mulch volcano

Heaping mulch against a tree trunk holds moisture on the bark and can cause rot and attract pests. Keep it a few inches away, and make a flat, wide ring, not a cone.

Mistake 4: no edge and no weed prep

  • Pull the weeds and cut a clean edge first, or the mulch just hides them for a month.
  • Use landscape fabric only where it suits: it can block water and roots in planted beds.
  • Leave the plants clear of thick mulch, especially around the crowns of perennials.

Mistake 5: wrong material or wrong time

Fine mulch packs down and keeps water out, coarse bark lets air through, and rock mulch is permanent and heats up in the sun. Spread organic mulch in late spring after the soil warms, or in fall, and top it up by an inch a year. See the topsoil calculator if the bed needs soil as well, and the landscape rock calculator for stone. Estimates only.

Frequently asked questions

How deep should mulch be?

Two to three inches is usual for beds, and thinner for fine materials. More than that can keep air and water from the soil.

How much mulch is a cubic yard?

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, which covers about 108 sq ft at 3 in. The 20 × 10 ft example needs 1.85 cu yd.

Is it cheaper to buy it in bags or by the yard?

Bags suit small jobs: 25 bags for the example. Bulk by the yard is usually less per cubic foot for larger beds. Ask a local landscape yard.

Do I need to remove the old mulch?

Not if there is only an inch or two. Rake it loose and add a thin layer. Do not keep building it up year after year.
