Common Mistakes Laying Laminate Flooring (UK): Packs and Gaps
Laminate is quick to fit and unforgiving of poor preparation. A 4 × 3.5 m room is 14 m², and with 10% extra you need 15.4 m², which is 7 packs of 2.22 m². The laminate flooring calculator sizes your room.
Mistake 1: no extra for cuts
The first and last rows and the door frames use extra:
| Waste | Area to buy | Packs of 2.22 m² |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | 14.7 m² | 7 |
| 8% | 15.1 m² | 7 |
| 10% | 15.4 m² | 7 |
| 15% | 16.1 m² | 8 |
Mistake 2: rounding the packs down
Always round up to whole packs, and keep one spare. The same floor with different pack sizes:
| Pack size | Packs |
|---|---|
| 1.76 m² per pack | 9 |
| 2.22 m² per pack | 7 |
| 2.5 m² per pack | 7 |
| 3 m² per pack | 6 |
Mistake 3: misjudging the room size
Measure at the widest points. Typical rooms:
| Room | Area | Packs | Beading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 × 3 m | 9 m² | 5 | 11.2 m |
| 4 × 3.5 m | 14 m² | 7 | 14.2 m |
| 5 × 4 m | 20 m² | 10 | 17.2 m |
| 6 × 5 m | 30 m² | 15 | 21.2 m |
Mistake 4: no expansion gap or acclimatisation
Without a gap at the walls, boards lift and buckle. Use spacers all round, and let the packs acclimatise. Cover the gap with skirting or beading: the skirting board calculator counts the lengths.
Mistake 5: an uneven floor and a poor first row
- Make the floor flat and dry, and use a damp-proof membrane on concrete.
- Stagger the end joints, and avoid a very thin last row by trimming the first.
- Cut the bottom of door frames so the boards slide under them.
For underlay and trim on the same list, use the laminate floor materials calculator. Estimates only.
Frequently asked questions
How much laminate flooring do I need?
A 4 × 3.5 m room is 14 m² and needs 15.4 m² at 10% extra, which is 7 packs of 2.22 m².
What is the expansion gap?
Laminate floats on the floor and moves with temperature and humidity, so leave a gap at each wall, often about 8 to 10 mm. Follow the maker instructions.
Should I acclimatise the boards?
Yes: leave the packs flat in the room for the time the maker says, often 48 hours, so they match the room conditions.
Do I need underlay?
Most laminate does, for sound and moisture. Use a damp-proof one over concrete.
