How this calculator works

This runs our laminate flooring calculator. Packs are the area plus waste divided by the coverage of a pack, rounded up. Underlay comes in 15 m² rolls, and the scotia or beading goes round the room except across the doorways.

packs = ⌈area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per pack⌉

Worked example: a 4 × 3.5 m room (14 m²) with 10% waste and 2.22 m² packs takes 7 packs, 1 roll of underlay, 14.2 m of beading and 1 door bar.

Tips before you buy

  • Lay the planks along the longest wall, or towards the main window. Check the width of the last row before you start.
  • Leave an expansion gap of 8 to 10 mm at the walls and the doorways.
  • Buy all the packs from one batch, and an extra pack for later repairs.
  • Fit the skirting before the floor, and the scotia after.
  • Check the pack for the underlay it needs, and for use over underfloor heating.

Frequently asked questions

How many packs of laminate do I need for a 4m x 3.5m room?

7 packs of 2.22 m² with 10% for cuts (7 with 5% for a simple layout).

Do I need underlay for laminate flooring?

Usually, unless the planks have a pad attached. Over concrete you also need a damp-proof membrane. Check the maker's instructions.

What is scotia or beading for?

It covers the expansion gap around the edge of the floor, and is fixed to the skirting board, not to the floor.

How much extra flooring should I buy?

5 to 10% for most rooms, and 15% for diagonal or herringbone layouts, plus a spare pack for later repairs.
