How Many Lights for a 3 Foot Christmas Tree?

A 3 ft Christmas tree needs about 300 lights at the standard 100 per foot, which is 3 strands of 100 (or 1 strand of 300). A fuller tree at 150 per foot needs 450 lights.

Your project

Allow about 1 ft for the tree stand and the topper.

The spacing, or the lit length, is printed on the box. It sets how many feet of string the lights make.

  • The usual rule is 100 lights for every foot of tree height, and more for a fuller look. LED lights run cooler and use far less power than incandescent ones. Check the maximum number of strands you can connect end to end on the box.

Before you buy: round up to whole packs, check the size printed on the label, and add a little spare. Your supplier has the final say.

Lights for a 3 ft tree, by how full you want it

This is a tabletop tree for a side table, a desk or a dorm room. Pick the fullness you want, then the strand size. Buying fewer, longer strands means fewer connections and plugs.

Strands are also sold by lit length. At 100 lights per foot the 300 lights a 3 ft tree needs make 63 ft of string at 2.5 in spacing, 100 ft of string at 4 in spacing, 150 ft of string at 6 in spacing. Wider spacing gives a longer string for the same bulb count, so check the box before you compare prices.

Fitting it under the ceiling

A 3 ft tree needs a ceiling of about 4.0 to 4.5 ft once you add the stand and a topper. See the full Christmas lights guide for a ceiling-to-tree-height chart, and the circuit load calculator to check how many strands one outlet can run.

Power and plugs

300 lights is 3 strands of 100. On LED strands (about 5 W each) that is only 15 watts in total, which is about 1% of a 15 amp circuit's safe load. The same lights in old-style incandescent strands (about 40 W each) draw 120 watts, which is 8% of the circuit, and the strands run hot.

Check the maximum number of strands you can connect end to end: older incandescent sets often allow only 3, which would need 1 outlets or splitters here. Many LED sets allow dozens. See the circuit load calculator if you are also lighting the outside.
