What Size Christmas Tree for a 2.3 m Ceiling?

A 2.3 m ceiling takes a 1.8 m (6 ft) Christmas tree, allowing for an 8 cm stand, a 20 cm topper and a 2 cm gap. A full tree that size is about 108 cm wide at the base and needs about 1.68 m of clear floor and 540 lights.

A tree stand adds 5 to 12 cm. A tree skirt box can add more.

The part above the tip of the tree.

About 2 cm is tight; leave more if the topper is tall or there is a light fitting.

  • Measure the ceiling where the tree will stand, and watch for sloped ceilings, beams and light fittings. A real tree loses a little height as it dries, and its branches spread more as it warms up. Keep a tree well away from heaters, fires and radiators: fire services say to keep it clear of heat sources, and 1 metre (about 3 feet) is the distance commonly recommended.

Before you buy: round up to whole packs, check the size printed on the label, and add a little spare. Your supplier has the final say.

Tree height for a 2.3 m ceiling, by stand and topper

The stand, the topper and the gap you leave under the ceiling all come off the ceiling height. Here is the tallest tree and the largest standard size for a 2.3 m ceiling with different combinations:

The largest size is not always the best choice. A full tree is about 60% as wide as it is tall, and the floor space adds 30 cm each side. The last column is the space left above a 20 cm topper.

A 2.3 m ceiling: room for an angel

A 2.3 m ceiling sits between two sizes. The 1.8 m tree fits with 20 cm above the usual topper, so a tall angel or star of up to 40 cm fits as well. A 2.1 m tree needs 10 cm more than the ceiling gives with a 20 cm topper.

That makes a 2.3 m room a good place for a real tree from a farm or a garden centre, where trees are often sold in height bands rather than exact sizes: a tree of up to 200 cm, measured standing in its stand, fits under the topper.

Use the Christmas tree size calculator with your own stand and topper, and see what Christmas lights cost to run before the lights go on every evening. Keep a real tree well away from fires, heaters and radiators (1 metre is the distance commonly quoted), and top up its water every day.

Frequently asked questions

What size Christmas tree for a 2.3 m ceiling?

A 1.8 m (6 ft) tree, with an 8 cm stand, a 20 cm topper and a 2 cm gap under the ceiling. That leaves room for 2.00 m of tree, and 1.8 m is the largest standard size that fits. Without a topper a 2.1 m tree fits.

How wide is a 1.8 m Christmas tree?

About 108 cm across the bottom branches for a full tree, which is about 60% of its height. Clear about 1.68 m of floor so there is room for the skirt and to walk past. Slim trees are narrower.

How many lights for a 1.8 m tree?

About 540 at 300 lights a metre, a rule of thumb for a full look. Retailer guides vary widely, so use fewer for cluster lights and more for a dense look.

Can I fit a 2.1 m tree under a 2.3 m ceiling?

Not with a 20 cm topper and an 8 cm stand: a 2.1 m tree needs 10 cm more than a 2.3 m ceiling leaves. Leaving the topper off makes it fit.
