Tree height for a 2.2 m ceiling, by stand and topper
The stand, the topper and the gap you leave under the ceiling all come off the ceiling height. Here is the tallest tree and the largest standard size for a 2.2 m ceiling with different combinations:
| Stand and topper | Tallest tree | Size to buy |
|---|---|---|
| 5 cm stand, no topper | 2.13 m | 2.1 m (7 ft) |
| 8 cm stand, 15 cm topper | 1.95 m | 1.8 m (6 ft) |
| 8 cm stand, 20 cm topper (this page) | 1.90 m | 1.8 m (6 ft) |
| 12 cm stand, 30 cm topper | 1.76 m | 1.5 m (5 ft) |
| 8 cm stand, 20 cm topper, 15 cm clear of a light fitting | 1.77 m | 1.5 m (5 ft) |
Trees that fit, with width and lights
The largest size is not always the best choice. A full tree is about 60% as wide as it is tall, and the floor space adds 30 cm each side. The last column is the space left above a 20 cm topper.
| Tree | Width at the base | Floor to clear | Lights (300 a metre) | Spare height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.2 m (4 ft) | 72 cm | 1.32 m | 360 | 70 cm |
| 1.5 m (5 ft) | 90 cm | 1.50 m | 450 | 40 cm |
| 1.8 m (6 ft) | 108 cm | 1.68 m | 540 | 10 cm |
A 2.2 m ceiling: the topper decides the size
With the usual 20 cm topper a 2.2 m ceiling takes a 1.8 m tree with 10 cm to spare. Take the topper off and a 2.1 m tree fits, but only just: there is nothing left over for a tree that comes out of the netting a little taller than its label.
If you want the taller tree, choose the stand first. On a 5 cm stand with no topper, 3 cm is left above a 2.1 m tree after the 2 cm gap: room for a flat bow, not a star. Otherwise the 1.8 m tree with a proper star is the safer buy.
Use the Christmas tree size calculator with your own stand and topper, and see what Christmas lights cost to run before the lights go on every evening. Keep a real tree well away from fires, heaters and radiators (1 metre is the distance commonly quoted), and top up its water every day.

Frequently asked questions
What size Christmas tree for a 2.2 m ceiling?
A 1.8 m (6 ft) tree, with an 8 cm stand, a 20 cm topper and a 2 cm gap under the ceiling. That leaves room for 1.90 m of tree, and 1.8 m is the largest standard size that fits. Without a topper a 2.1 m tree fits.
How wide is a 1.8 m Christmas tree?
About 108 cm across the bottom branches for a full tree, which is about 60% of its height. Clear about 1.68 m of floor so there is room for the skirt and to walk past. Slim trees are narrower.
How many lights for a 1.8 m tree?
About 540 at 300 lights a metre, a rule of thumb for a full look. Retailer guides vary widely, so use fewer for cluster lights and more for a dense look.
Can I fit a 2.1 m tree under a 2.2 m ceiling?
Not with a 20 cm topper and an 8 cm stand: a 2.1 m tree needs 20 cm more than a 2.2 m ceiling leaves. Leaving the topper off makes it fit.
