Lights for a 7ft tree, by how full you want it
Retailer guides disagree a lot, from about 80 to nearly 500 lights per metre of tree. Here are three points in that range, with the sets you would need and the length of lit wire at 5 cm between bulbs:
| Lights per metre | Look | Lights | Sets of 200 | Sets of 500 | Lit length |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 a metre | Light, or cluster lights | 315 | 2 | 1 | 16 m |
| 300 a metre | Full (the calculator) | 630 | 4 | 2 | 32 m |
| 450 a metre | Dense | 945 | 5 | 2 | 47 m |
A 7ft tree: watch the label
A tree sold as 7ft is 213 cm tall, a little more than 2.1 m. At 300 lights a metre the extra 3 cm adds only 10 lights, so about 630 gives a full look either way.
This is the size that fits a 2.4 m ceiling. Plan for 2 sets of 500 or 4 sets of 200, and put the first set on near the trunk so that the tree is lit from the middle out.
Running LED tree lights for the whole season costs very little: see what Christmas lights cost to run. For the room, see the tree for a 2.4 m ceiling. Keep a real tree well away from fires, heaters and radiators, and switch the lights off when you go out or go to bed.
