How Much Sod Do I Need? Rolls, Pallets and Square Feet
Part of the project planner: Planning a new lawn and garden beds.
1,000 square feet of lawn needs about 1,050 square feet of sod with 5% extra, which is 105 rolls of 10 sq ft (2 × 5 ft) or 2.3 pallets of 450 sq ft. The sod calculator works it out for your own lawn, with the roll size and a cost estimate.
Sod for common lawn sizes
With 5% waste, in rolls of 10 sq ft and pallets of 450 sq ft:
| Lawn | Sod to order | Rolls (10 sq ft) | Pallets (450 sq ft) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | 525 sq ft | 53 | 1.2 |
| 1,000 sq ft | 1,050 sq ft | 105 | 2.3 |
| 2,000 sq ft | 2,100 sq ft | 210 | 4.7 |
| 3,000 sq ft | 3,150 sq ft | 315 | 7.0 |
| 5,000 sq ft | 5,250 sq ft | 525 | 11.7 |
| 10,000 sq ft | 10,500 sq ft | 1050 | 23.3 |
How to lay sod
- Prepare the ground. Loosen the soil, remove stones and weeds, add topsoil or compost, and rake it level and about an inch below paths and drives so that the sod ends up flush.
- Order for the day. Sod must be laid within 24 hours of delivery.
- Start along a straight edge, such as a path or a driveway, and lay the rolls tight against each other with the seams staggered like bricks.
- Cut the sod to fit around beds and curves with a sharp knife.
- Roll it with a lawn roller so that the roots touch the soil.
- Water at once and keep it moist for the first two weeks: the soil under the sod should be damp. Stay off it until it has rooted (usually 2 to 3 weeks).
Tips
- Measure the lawn in sections, and add them up. See the square footage guide.
- Add 5% for a simple rectangle and 10% for curves and a lot of cutting.
- Lay sod in cool weather if you can: spring and fall are best for cool-season grasses, and late spring and summer for warm-season grasses.
- Do not leave sod rolled up for more than a day: it yellows and heats up.
Compare the cost and timing in the sod vs grass seed guide, and prepare the soil with the topsoil calculator. Estimates only: confirm the amount with your supplier.
Frequently asked questions
How much sod do I need?
The lawn area plus 5% for cuts and waste, ordered in square feet, rolls or pallets. A lawn 40 × 25 ft is 1,000 sq ft, so 1,050 sq ft of sod, which is 105 rolls of 10 sq ft.
How many square feet are on a pallet of sod?
Usually 450 square feet (some growers use 400 to 500), about 45 rolls of 10 square feet. A pallet is heavy: ask about delivery.
How many rolls of sod for 1,000 square feet?
105 rolls of 2 × 5 ft (10 sq ft each), including 5% extra, or 158 rolls if they are the smaller 16 inch by 5 ft size.
Is sod or seed better?
Sod makes an instant lawn and is ready to use in weeks, but costs several times more than seed. Seed is cheaper and has more choice, but takes a season to fill in.
How soon should I lay sod after it arrives?
Within 24 hours. Sod is alive and heats up on the pallet, so keep it in the shade and water the pallet if it must wait.
