How this calculator works
Sod is sold by area, so the calculation is the lawn's square footage plus a margin for cutting around edges and obstacles. We then divide by the coverage of a roll or a pallet.
Worked example: a 40 × 25 ft lawn is 1,000 ft². With 5% waste, order 1,050 ft². That is 105 standard rolls (10 ft² each), or about 2.3 pallets at 450 ft² per pallet.
Tips before you buy
- Ordering exactly your area is how people end up one roll short. Waste matters more with curves, so measure carefully and round up.
- Lay sod within 24 hours of delivery, ideally the same day, and water it immediately and often for the first two weeks.
- Prepare the soil first: grade it, loosen the top 4 to 6 inches, add topsoil or compost if needed, and keep it level with sidewalks.
- Stagger the seams like bricks and press the edges tightly together without stretching the sod.

Frequently asked questions
How many rolls of sod are in a pallet?
About 45 rolls of 10 ft², or roughly 450 ft², though it varies by grower (400 to 500 ft² is typical). Always ask your supplier.
How much extra sod should I buy?
5% for simple shapes, 10% for curves and irregular beds. It is far cheaper than a second delivery.
How much does sod cost?
Roughly $0.30 to $1.00 per square foot for common grasses, before delivery, and more for premium varieties. Prices vary by region and season.
