What Size Christmas Tree for a 12 Foot Ceiling?

A 12 ft ceiling takes a 10 ft Christmas tree, allowing for a 3 inch stand, an 8 inch topper and an inch of gap. It is about 72 inches wide at the base and needs about 8.0 ft of clear floor and 1,000 lights.

A tree stand adds 2 to 5 inches. A tree skirt box can add more.

The part above the tip of the tree.

About an inch is tight; leave more if the topper is tall or there is a light fitting.

  • Measure the ceiling where the tree will stand, and watch for sloped ceilings, beams and light fixtures. A real tree loses about an inch of height as it dries, and its branches spread more as it warms up. Keep a tree at least 3 feet from heaters, fireplaces and radiators.

Before you buy: round up to whole packs, check the size printed on the label, and add a little spare. Your supplier has the final say.

Tree height for a 12 ft ceiling, by stand and topper

The stand, the topper and the gap you leave under the ceiling all come off the ceiling height. Here is the tallest tree and the largest standard size for a 12 ft ceiling with different combinations:

The largest size is not always the best choice. A full tree is about 60% as wide as it is tall, and the floor space includes a foot each side. The last column is the space left above an 8 inch topper.

A 12 ft ceiling: no 11 ft size

Tree heights jump from 10 ft to 12 ft, so a 12 ft ceiling takes a 10 ft tree with 12 inches spare, even though 11.0 ft of tree would fit. A 12 ft tree needs 12 more inches than this ceiling has.

Use the spare height for a taller topper (up to 20 inches here) or a taller stand. In a two-story room, look at where the tree is seen from: a tree that looks right from the landing can look small from the sofa.

Use the Christmas tree size calculator with your own stand and topper, and read what size Christmas tree for my room for choosing and placing the tree. Keep a real tree at least 3 feet from fireplaces, heaters and radiators, and water it every day.

Frequently asked questions

What size Christmas tree for a 12 foot ceiling?

A 10 ft tree, with a 3 inch stand, an 8 inch topper and an inch of gap under the ceiling. That leaves room for 11.0 ft of tree, and 10 ft is the largest standard size that fits.

How wide is a 10 ft Christmas tree?

About 72 inches across at the base for a full tree, which is about 60% of its height. Clear about 8.0 ft of floor so there is room for the skirt and to walk past. Slim trees are narrower.

How many lights for the tree?

About 1,000 lights for a 10 ft tree at 100 lights a foot, which is 10 strands of 100. Use 150 a foot for a fuller look.

Can I put a 12 ft tree under a 12 ft ceiling?

Not with an 8 inch topper and a 3 inch stand: a 12 ft tree needs 12 more inches than a 12 ft ceiling leaves. Even without a topper it does not fit, so stay with the 10 ft tree.
