A tree stand adds 2 to 5 inches. A tree skirt box can add more.

The part above the tip of the tree.

About an inch is tight; leave more if the topper is tall or there is a light fitting.

  • Measure the ceiling where the tree will stand, and watch for sloped ceilings, beams and light fixtures. A real tree loses about an inch of height as it dries, and its branches spread more as it warms up. Keep a tree at least 3 feet from heaters, fireplaces and radiators.

Before you buy: round up to whole packs, check the size printed on the label, and add a little spare. Your supplier has the final say.

A 9 ft ceiling: room for a big topper

A 9 ft ceiling takes an 8 ft tree. Many people choose a 7.5 ft tree here instead, which leaves 6 inches above an 8 inch topper: room for a tall angel or a large star without a cramped look.

Width is the limit to watch. An 8 ft tree is about 58 inches across at the base and needs about 6.8 ft of clear floor, so measure the corner as well as the ceiling.

Use the Christmas tree size calculator with your own stand and topper, and read what size Christmas tree for my room for choosing and placing the tree. Keep a real tree at least 3 feet from fireplaces, heaters and radiators, and water it every day.

Frequently asked questions

What size Christmas tree for a 9 foot ceiling?

An 8 ft tree, with a 3 inch stand, an 8 inch topper and an inch of gap under the ceiling. That leaves room for 8.0 ft of tree, and 8 ft is the largest standard size that fits.

How wide is an 8 ft Christmas tree?

About 58 inches across at the base for a full tree, which is about 60% of its height. Clear about 6.8 ft of floor so there is room for the skirt and to walk past. Slim trees are narrower.

How many lights for the tree?

About 800 lights for an 8 ft tree at 100 lights a foot, which is 8 strands of 100. Use 150 a foot for a fuller look.

Can I put a 9 ft tree under a 9 ft ceiling?

Not with an 8 inch topper and a 3 inch stand: a 9 ft tree needs 12 more inches than a 9 ft ceiling leaves. Even without a topper it does not fit, so stay with the 8 ft tree.
