A tree stand adds 2 to 5 inches. A tree skirt box can add more.

The part above the tip of the tree.

About an inch is tight; leave more if the topper is tall or there is a light fitting.

  • Measure the ceiling where the tree will stand, and watch for sloped ceilings, beams and light fixtures. A real tree loses about an inch of height as it dries, and its branches spread more as it warms up. Keep a tree at least 3 feet from heaters, fireplaces and radiators.

Before you buy: round up to whole packs, check the size printed on the label, and add a little spare. Your supplier has the final say.

Tree height for an 8.5 ft ceiling, by stand and topper

The stand, the topper and the gap you leave under the ceiling all come off the ceiling height. Here is the tallest tree and the largest standard size for an 8.5 ft ceiling with different combinations:

Trees that fit, with width and lights

The largest size is not always the best choice. A full tree is about 60% as wide as it is tall, and the floor space includes a foot each side. The last column is the space left above an 8 inch topper.

An 8½ ft ceiling: an exact fit

With these allowances a 7.5 ft tree fills the space exactly, with 1 inch left between the topper and the ceiling. That works for an artificial tree, whose height you know. For a real tree, measure it standing in its stand before you put the topper on: a cut tree can be an inch or two taller than its label.

If you want more breathing room, a 7 ft tree leaves 6 inches above the topper. A 7.5 ft tree needs about 6.5 ft of clear floor across.

Frequently asked questions

What size Christmas tree for an 8.5 foot ceiling?

A 7.5 ft tree, with a 3 inch stand, an 8 inch topper and an inch of gap under the ceiling. That leaves room for 7.5 ft of tree, and 7.5 ft is the largest standard size that fits. Without a topper an 8 ft tree fits.

How wide is a 7.5 ft Christmas tree?

About 54 inches across at the base for a full tree, which is about 60% of its height. Clear about 6.5 ft of floor so there is room for the skirt and to walk past. Slim trees are narrower.

How many lights for the tree?

About 750 lights for a 7.5 ft tree at 100 lights a foot, which is 8 strands of 100. Use 150 a foot for a fuller look.

Can I put an 8 ft tree under an 8.5 ft ceiling?

Not with an 8 inch topper and a 3 inch stand: an 8 ft tree needs 6 more inches than an 8.5 ft ceiling leaves. Leaving the topper off makes it fit.
