A tree stand adds 2 to 5 inches. A tree skirt box can add more.

The part above the tip of the tree.

About an inch is tight; leave more if the topper is tall or there is a light fitting.

  • Measure the ceiling where the tree will stand, and watch for sloped ceilings, beams and light fixtures. A real tree loses about an inch of height as it dries, and its branches spread more as it warms up. Keep a tree at least 3 feet from heaters, fireplaces and radiators.

Before you buy: round up to whole packs, check the size printed on the label, and add a little spare. Your supplier has the final say.

A 7 ft ceiling: make the topper count

Low ceilings are common in basements, older houses and many apartments, and they are where the topper matters most. With the usual 8 inch star the tallest tree is 6 ft. Take the topper off, or use a flat ribbon bow on the tip, and a 6.5 ft tree fits instead.

On a ceiling this low a slim or pencil tree often looks taller than a full one, because the narrow outline draws the eye upward. A full 6 ft tree is about 43 inches across at the base, which is a lot of floor in a small room.

Frequently asked questions

What size Christmas tree for a 7 foot ceiling?

A 6 ft tree, with a 3 inch stand, an 8 inch topper and an inch of gap under the ceiling. That leaves room for 6.0 ft of tree, and 6 ft is the largest standard size that fits. Without a topper a 6.5 ft tree fits.

How wide is a 6 ft Christmas tree?

About 43 inches across at the base for a full tree, which is about 60% of its height. Clear about 5.6 ft of floor so there is room for the skirt and to walk past. Slim trees are narrower.

How many lights for the tree?

About 600 lights for a 6 ft tree at 100 lights a foot, which is 6 strands of 100. Use 150 a foot for a fuller look.

Can I put a 6.5 ft tree under a 7 ft ceiling?

Not with an 8 inch topper and a 3 inch stand: a 6.5 ft tree needs 6 more inches than a 7 ft ceiling leaves. Leaving the topper off makes it fit.
