Concrete needed for a 16 × 20 ft slab, by thickness
These figures are for the whole 320 ft² slab. The last column adds 10% for waste, which is what we suggest you order.
| Thickness | Cubic feet | Cubic yards | 80 lb bags | 60 lb bags | Yards with 10% waste |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 in | 106.7 | 3.95 | 178 | 238 | 4.35 |
| 5 in | 133.3 | 4.94 | 223 | 297 | 5.43 |
| 6 in | 160.0 | 5.93 | 267 | 356 | 6.52 |
| 8 in | 213.3 | 7.90 | 356 | 475 | 8.69 |
What a 16 × 20 slab is used for
A 16 × 20 ft slab is a big patio or pavilion floor, or a roomy workshop. It is also a half-court-sized practice pad. Four to 5 inches for a patio, and 5 to 6 for a workshop. Reinforce and joint it carefully at this size.
Bags or ready-mix for 16 × 20 ft?
At 4.35 cubic yards, ready-mix is the sensible choice. Doing it with bags would mean 196 bags (about 7.8 tons of dry mix), which is too much to mix by hand before the first batch starts to set. Ask your supplier about their minimum order and how long you have to unload.
Don't forget what goes under and inside it
A slab needs a compacted base, usually 4 inches of gravel, which for this size is about 4.74 cubic yards after allowing for compaction (see the gravel calculator). Reinforcement such as rebar or wire mesh holds cracks tight: the rebar calculator counts bars for a 16 × 20 ft grid.
